Abstract
In 2023, the municipality of El Grullo, Jalisco, was recognized as the cradle of cooperativism in the Sierra de Amula region, due to its significant contributions to the development of this economic model in the area. This event raised the following question: What were the reasons behind this recognition? Therefore, the objective of this study is to establish the causes that justify this distinction. Three cooperatives were identified in this municipality, with Caja SMG standing out as the main promoter of this movement due to its promotion and creation of four other regional cooperative entities, the development of cooperative programs scaled up to the national level, the participation of its executives in regional and national cooperative governing bodies, the implementation of social programs and support initiatives, and active participation in community development. SMG’s contributions to national, regional, and local financial cooperativism, including the increase in cooperatives, their impact on the economic growth of communities, and their social work, justify the recognition of El Grullo as the cradle of regional cooperativism. This study encourages further research related to the intergenerational influence of cooperatives on social mobility, employment, and household financial stability, among others.
