Abstract

Climate variability and  climate  change  represent  a  significant  challenge  to  rural  farming communities, especially in regions where access to formal meteorological information is limited. The objective of this article was to report how traditional knowledge is used in seasonal climate forecasting and its influence on climate change adaptation in farming communities located in the Central and Mountain regions of Guerrero, Mexico. To this end, data was collected in four communities in the region, and a regression model was designed to identify possible correlations between the use of traditional knowledge and several factors. In addition, semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation were conducted. The main results showed that 89 % of producers use traditional knowledge to forecast the climate, with a positive correlation found between the use of this knowledge and the farmer’s age and land size. Similarly, it was found that 64.3 % combine traditional knowledge with other kinds of climate information, while 22.9 % base their actions only on traditional knowledge. These results highlight the value of traditional knowledge in seasonal climate forecasting and adaptation to climate change in rural communities in Guerrero, Mexico.
