Abstract
Protected agriculture is a relatively recent phenomenon in Hidalgo, Mexico. Within the state, Tecozautla stands out for the expansion of the cultivated area between 2013 and 2023. This study examines the relevance of applying the term “entrepreneur” in rural contexts by analyzing personality traits associated with entrepreneurship, using protected agriculture producers in Tecozautla as a case study. The specific objectives were: (1) to determine, based on a literature review, whether the term “entrepreneur” is appropriate for characterizing protected agriculture producers in general; (2) to analyze the economic significance of this type of agriculture in the municipality; and (3) to describe the sociodemographic profile of those engaged in it. The study was conducted with 39 producers between February and May 2023. The instrument included items related to skills, attitudes, and motivations associated with entrepreneurial spirit. The reliability analysis showed that the refined scale performed acceptably overall, with a McDonald’s ω coefficient of 0.852. Results from the exploratory factor analysis indicated that the refined scale measures a single construct, referred to as the “entrepreneurial profile.
