Abstract
The main production cost in a poultry production system is feed, which represents approximately 70% of all costs, therefore, it is important to take advantage of native tropical plant resources with nutritional potential, especial
those with high protein content, such as guácimo (Guazuma ulmifolia Lam). The objective of this study was to determine the production parameters of broiler chickens supplemented with G. ulmifolia foliage as an alternative to reduce poultry feed costs. 60 broiler chickens were fed three diets, all of which included G. ulmifolia flour meal. Productive performance was recorded for 49 days, and the data were analyzed using a completely randomized design. The treatments consisted of: commercial feed, a diet with 10% G. ulmifolia, and a diet with 20% G. ulmifolia. There were four replicates per treatment and five chickens per experimental unit. The experiment was divided into two stages: The initial stage consisted of providing commercial feed to all birds (Weeks 1-3), and the fattening stage (4 weeks) the three treatments were tested. Chickens receiving 10% G. ulmifolia in their diet achieved a final weight no different from that of chickens fed commercial feed (2.27 ± 0.17 and 2.61 ± 0.08 kg, respectively), and the best economic profitability was observed (1.53 vs. 1.34, respectively). The commercial feed resulted in the highest weight gain (0.067 kg), highest feed intake (4.71 kg) and best feed conversion (2.49), generating the highest income ($1,829.1). Meanwhile, the diet with 20% G. ulmifolia resulted in the lowest feed intake (3.64 kg), lowest final weight (1.76 kg) and lowest income ($1,234.8). It is concluded that the inclusion of 10% of G. ulmifolia in the diets provided during the fattening stage of Cobb line chickens is feasible.
