Resumen
Introducción: El ahuehuete (Taxodium mucronatum Ten.), Árbol Nacional de México, se encuentra frecuentemente en áreas verdes urbanas, en condiciones de humedad restringida y suelos compactados. Estas características influyen negativamente en el crecimiento y supervivencia.
Objetivo: Evaluar el crecimiento de raíces de árboles jóvenes de ahuehuete por efecto de la frecuencia de riego y aflojamiento del suelo circundante a la cepa de plantación.
Materiales y métodos: Se plantaron 24 árboles de 2 m de altura en un área urbana. El experimento se estableció como un diseño completamente al azar con arreglo factorial: a) frecuencia de riego (frecuente [una vez a la semana] y espaciado [una vez cada dos semanas]) y b) tratamiento al suelo circundante de la cepa de plantación (suelo con y sin aflojamiento). El crecimiento del sistema radical se monitoreó durante 12 meses a través de fotografías digitales, obtenidas de rizotrones instalados en una pared lateral de cada cepa de plantación.
Resultados y discusión: La compactación original del sitio no presentó niveles restrictivos para el crecimiento; por tanto, el aflojamiento circundante no mejoró significativamente (P > 0.1) el crecimiento radical a corto plazo. La longitud de raíz (267.75 a 453.28 cm) no mostró diferencias estadísticas significativas para los factores riego, suelo y su interacción; sin embargo, el número de raíces sí fue afectado por la interacción de los factores (P ≤ 0.1). Los árboles con riego frecuente y suelo sin aflojamiento desarrollaron mayor número de raíces (190.5).
Conclusión: La interacción frecuencia de riego y condición de suelo tiene efecto sobre el número de raíces, pero no sobre la longitud.
