Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify the bioactive compounds present in avocado agro-industrial residues that could serve as an  alternative  ingredient  in  animal  feed  in arid  and  semi-arid  regions  of  Mexico.  Residue  samples  were  collected  from  a  guacamole processing plant in the Bajío region of Mexico for proximal chemical analysis and biocompound analysis using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Residues had a chemical composition  higher  than  that  of  some  forages,  with  93.35  %  dry  matter,  5.74  %  crude  protein, 17.5 % ether extract, 32.14 % neutral detergent fiber, 26.58 % acid detergent fiber, and 5.59 % ash content. Additionally, 129 different compounds were identified, including vitamin E, sitosterol, hexadecanoic acid, octadecanoic acid, and pentadecanoic acid.  Therefore,  the  results  indicate that avocado agro-industrial residue can  be  considered  as  an  alternative  feed  source,  because the bioactive compounds it contains may be beneficial when included in the diet of livestock in the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico.
