Abstract
The Production for Well-Being Program (Programa Producción para el Bienestar, PPB) contributes to food self-sufficiency through direct economic support to producers. This case study was conducted in the municipality of Cosamaloapan, Veracruz, Mexico. The objective of the study was to analyze the limitations to changing the sugarcane production model based on producers’ knowledge, level of herbicide use, and technology adoption trajectory. Structured surveys were administered to 73 producers selected through stratified sampling by land area; socioeconomic, technical, and perceptual variables were analyzed. A widespread dependence on herbicides was identified, with 24 commercial brands used across all strata and recurring combinations of active ingredients (glyphosate, 2,4-D, and diuron), indicating homogeneous technological patterns. The sugarcane production model relies on homogeneous technological patterns that hinder the incorporation of alternatives, even in contexts of pressure for change. The producers’ position on Rogers’ innovation adoption curve reflects stable trajectories that limit production change, associated with technological dependence and barriers in information, alternatives and market.
